Abstract

This study explores the role of Health Management Information Systems (HMIS) in tracking the nature, efficiency, and quality of tasks carried out by Community Health Workers (CHWs) in reducing child mortality due to pneumonia and diarrhoea in Yobe and Taraba States, Nigeria. Using the District Health Information System (DHIS), the research assesses the effectiveness of CHWs' activities and identifies areas for improvement. Findings indicate that Yobe State demonstrated higher efficiency in managing pneumonia and diarrhoea cases compared to Taraba State, attributed to better use of HMIS tools. Despite significant data quality issues, the study highlights the potential of HMIS to enhance health outcomes through improved data collection, management, and utilization. Recommendations include enhancing data quality assurance, expanding technological infrastructure, providing continuous training for CHWs, and fostering intersectoral collaboration. Addressing these limitations can lead to more effective health interventions and reduced child mortality in Nigeria.
